  • Both gerontology and geriatrics specialize in aging. Gerontologists study aging while geriatric medical providers actually see and treat older adults. Gerontologists tend to be researchers or educators while geriatric medical providers can be physicians, nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists, or psychologists.

  • According to the American Geriatrics Society, a geriatrician is a physician who is specifically trained to evaluate and manage the unique healthcare needs and treatment preferences of older people. Geriatricians focus on maintaining well-being and independence based on high-quality, person-centered care. They diagnose and treat conditions that may commonly occur with age. Geriatricians often work collaboratively with other health professionals who specialize in caring for older adults, including nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, mental health professionals, and social workers.

  • Across many health professions, providers continue their training with a geriatric specialized. Depending on the profession, the path to becoming a specialist varies. It may require additional formal education and training through a residency or fellowship and/or a specialty examination.

This additional training may not mean that the specialist is a better clinician than another provider. However, it does indicate the providers’ commitment to excellence, professional development, and lifelong learning when it comes to aging and geriatric medicine. Therefore, often times, this provide is the best provider for our aging adults. They have an understanding of the importance of person-centered care and examining their patients through a holistic approach. So, you may not need a geriatric specialist, but if available, they should be the provide of choice for these reasons.

  • Sometimes it can be difficult to find the specialist that you need. To find a geriatric specialist, there are a few different methods. Most major hospital systems will have a geriatric medicine department - this is a good place to start. You can always search for “geriatric specialist” and the discipline requested. This should take you to the professional association, which will have a provider locator. Finally, you could locate the local university and search for a faculty member that might be able to make a recommendation.
